At least six people have been killed and several others injured in a crash involving about 70 vehicles in Mississippi County, Missouri on Thursday, local officials said. According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, the crash closed both Interstate-57’s north and south lanes.

The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office said the crash first occurred around 8 a.m. Authorities are currently investigating whether the prevailing fog contributed to the pile.

The Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, “We urge you to avoid all unnecessary traffic at this time to allow emergency personnel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this horrific incident.”

It is not yet clear how many people were injured. Interstate-57, at least 13 miles between Charleston, Missouri and the Illinois State Line, is currently closed.

Patients were sent to at least three different hospitals, and at least 12 ambulances and 2 air ambulances were called to the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
