Acceptance: An education official said on Thursday that the Taliban would allow girls around Afghanistan to return to class when high schools reopen next week, after months of uncertainty over whether the group would allow full access to education for girls and women.

“All schools will be open to all men and women,” Education Ministry spokesman Aziz Ahmed Ryan told Reuters.

“But there are certain conditions for girls,” he said, adding that female students are taught separately from males and only by female teachers.

He said in some rural areas where there is a shortage of female teachers, only adult male teachers will be allowed to teach women.

“No school will be closed this year. If any school closes, it will be the responsibility of the Ministry of Education to reopen it,” Ryan added.

Since the overthrow of the Western-backed government last August, the austerity Islamic movement has been advancing one of the key demands of the international community to admit women and girls to schools and colleges.

Most countries have so far refused to formally recognize the Taliban, amid concerns about their treatment of girls and women and allegations of human rights abuses against ex-combatants and expelled administration officials.

The Taliban have promised to investigate alleged abuses and not seek revenge on their former adversaries.

The group that last ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 banned female education and most jobs. Since coming back to power, more men and women have returned to education than women and girls.

The Taliban are seeking to run the country according to Islamic law, while accessing billions of dollars in development aid needed to eradicate widespread poverty and hunger.

Sanctions against some of the group’s leading members have complicated the situation.

The Taliban claim that they respect the rights of women under Islamic law and local customs. But restrictions on access to public life, including many women’s jobs, have forced some to leave the workplace.

Heather Barr, co-director of Human Rights Watch’s Women’s Rights, urged the international community against complacency after the announcement.

“Girls’ high schools have been given more attention by donors – many donors have told me that they see this issue as’ totemic ‘,” he said.

Bar reopening schools does not mean that the broader rights of girls and girls in the community will be protected, Bar added.

Seventeen-year-old Farzana said she was already washing and ironing her uniform as she looked forward to joining her friends in her Kabul classroom. After being home for six months, she said she and the others were mentally disturbed from leaving the study.
