New Delhi: Festival of Colors – ‘Holi’ is in a corner and there is already excitement in the air. Although Holi is synonymous with color fights, water balloons and delicious food for many, it is important to keep in mind the health of our environment as well. Playing Holi in an environmentally friendly way does not make it fun. On the contrary, it reduces pollution, carbon footprint and keeps us healthy and safe. Also, we will not regret playing the eco-friendly Holi because there will be no psoriasis or any drug plan to follow.

“Holi should be environmentally friendly not only for our environment but also for our health,” says Dr. Supriya Awasthi, Professor, School of Allied Health Sciences, Noida International University.

Below are some of Dr. Awasthi’s ways to play eco-friendly Holi.

1. Use of organic dyes: Instead of buying chemical dyes, you can use organic and herbal dyes. Chemical dyes are not only harmful to the skin, eyes and hair, they are also difficult to remove later. If you have diabetes, you should avoid using chemical dyes because diabetics are more prone to skin infections. Do not put colors on animals as they can cause severe infection.

Chemical dyes can be harmful to people suffering from respiratory problems such as inflammation, eye irritation, rash, pneumonia and asthma. These colors pollute water, land and air and damage water bodies and soil. If the color is mixed in the water, it cannot be removed by the regular sewage system.

2. Avoid playing Holi with water: To save water, you can use dry paints. It also prevents colors from reacting with our skin. We can use everyday ingredients to change the natural colors yellow and black flour to yellow and corn flour and henna to green. You will enjoy making these colors and it will be easy in the pocket. You can enjoy these colors unlimitedly without fear of any kind of skin infection.

3. Avoid using plastic in any form: Do not use plastic to carry colors, and avoid using cheap plastic pistols and balloons. At Holi, parties use paper or palm leaf trays. Also do not dispose of plastic items on the streets. Nowadays, biodegradable pies are also available in the market. They are beautiful looking pics, which will be a great investment for you. The balloons block the drainage system.

4. Avoid noise: Avoid playing loud music or drums because it causes pollution and affects animals but children and the elderly.

5. Choose Alternative Healthy Foods: You can substitute gujia and deep fried foods as a healthy alternative to holly foods like baked gujia, brown bread tahi wada, ragi malpuvas, low fat and pang tandai and fruit raita. Try making your own desserts at home so you can control carbohydrates, oil and sugar.

Be sure to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water to keep yourself hydrated while enjoying all the festivities, otherwise the celebration will later turn into dehydration and prolonged drug treatment. Also, balance your involvement with physical activity by dancing your heart out.

6. Choose eco-friendly gifts for your loved ones: Instead of gifting colors and sprays, you can gift DIY color kits, healthy snacks, dried fruits, and scented candles.

7. Use flowers: There are many traditional places and temples in India where Holi is played with flowers. You can leave the colors completely and choose the flowers for playing Holi and making Rangoli. Flowers can also be used to make herbal colors. They do not affect your skin and eyes, but rather benefit the skin.
