Indraprastha Gas Ltd, India’s largest CNG retailer, has teamed up with Pune-based electric vehicle maker Kinetic Green to set up a battery-replacement plant called ‘Energy Cafe’, which will replace exhausted two- and three-wheeler EV batteries with fully charged batteries. .

“Under the alliance, IGL and Kinetic will build an in-depth network of battery replacement stations, starting in the Delhi area, where many electric three-wheelers and electric two-wheelers will have battery swapping facilities,” the company said. Report.

Users can easily install the Energy Cafe mobile processor on their phones, find the nearest battery-replacement station, book batteries from available charged batteries, pay through the digital payment gateway, and replace with a discharged battery at any of the IGL gas stations. Only for the fee they consume.

A concept of battery replacement is gaining popularity in India in the transition to electric vehicles (EVs) and is increasing the speed, and addresses some of the important concerns and barriers that drivers face in owning and operating EVs.

“Under the battery swapping concept, EVs can be sold to customers without a lithium-ion battery, and drivers can get batteries for a single utility charge by paying a small amount of ‘battery as fuel,” it said.

With this, it claimed that the price of the EV could be halved and brought about to be less than the price of the internal combustion engine, which is not equal.

Also, drivers no longer have to worry about limits and can always replace the charged battery as they used to refuel their traditional ICE vehicles.

“Vehicle re-charging time has been eliminated as it only takes 2 minutes to replace the battery and customers do not have to worry about charging the batteries or buying a new one in the future,” IGL said.

“Battery replacement stations can be set up at convenient locations such as where we have fuel pumps, where customers can return the discharged batteries and replace them with fully charged ones.”

This technology is best suited for light electric vehicles such as two-wheelers and three-wheelers, where the batteries are lighter and smaller and can be easily replaced manually.

At Energy Cafe, IGL and Kinetic conceptualize and use advanced technology and offer a comprehensive IoT (Internet of Things) based layout, including a smart battery with protocol for charging and swapping operation.

“The system monitors the battery and the station, which is powered by IoT and integrated with the app. It provides smart network users with a real-time view of battery location and charging status,” the statement said.

Stations are modular, intelligent and connected. Many of its platforms are compatible with e-bike, e-auto and e-rickshaw. The system battery box module uses special lithium-ion batteries; Each battery weighs about 12-13 kg and can be easily removed and replaced.

“The price of a battery swap will also be lower than the price of equivalent fuel, say petrol or diesel, which will not only facilitate customers but also reduce transportation costs,” the company said.

Battery exchange is interchangeable across brands and vehicle models. IGL will play a role in providing the infrastructure. Initially, the Energy Cafe could be set up using IGL’s Delhi / NCR network of current well-established CNG stations.

Kinetic Green will act as a technology partner, providing knowledge of the EV domain, and helping to develop and bring EV population to transition stations.

Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Founder and CEO, Kinetic Green Energy and Power Solutions Ltd.

“Today, we have launched the first 2 stations and are planning to expand to 50 stations by the beginning of 2022, focusing on New Delhi, one of the leading states for EVs in India, with a favorable policy framework for the state. Government towards battery change”.
