The Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union on Thursday accused several dormitory residents of being “wrongly” fined for allowing first-year students to stay in their rooms.

In a letter to the Dean of Students (DoS) Sudhir Pratap Singh, the student body administration immediately intervened in the matter and demanded that all fines imposed on students in the name of ‘warden check’ be revoked.

“Many hoteliers pay Rs. A fine of Rs 2,000 is imposed. However, it should be clarified that the majority of such unrecognized students are JNU (Patch 2021). By the university, ”the letter said.

JNUSU councilor Anaka Pradeep said several hostels had been “raided” in the past few days in the name of warden checks and many second- and third-year students had been fined for possessing “unauthorized persons”.

“Falsely fined. A friend of mine received a notice to submit a fine of Rs 2,000 for possessing unauthorized guests. The university has threatened to double-lock his room if he fails to pay the fine. How will these students pay the fine in the short notice?”

However, the university administration said that wardens were conducting inspections at several hostels to remove people without permission to stay in the hostels.

“Wardens only evict people living in hostels without permission, not authorized occupants,” Singh said.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union (JNUSU) has further alleged that students have been fined more than mentioned in the university manual.

According to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) handbook, ‘unauthorized persons) will be given Rs. A fine of Rs 1,000 will be levied, but many students will be fined Rs. A fine of Rs 2,000 was imposed, too, in a short notice, ”JNUSU said in a statement.
Responding to this, Singh said the students have been fined according to the manual and not more than that.

Action has been taken as per the manual and students have been fined as per the manual, ”he said.
