The title ‘Jalsa’, which means festive gathering or gathering, is a misnomer for such a serious and emotional film.

Director Suresh Triveni’s film Maya Menon (Vidya Balan) and Ruksana (Shebali Shah) are two mothers whose story is intertwined with their destiny. As Triveni efficiently reveals both the inner worlds of the characters and the accounts of their actions, the audience is immediately immersed in the life of the characters, their situations and their characters in it.

Maya is a renowned and powerful television presenter working on the WRD News Network. He is survived by a disabled child named Ayush (Surya Kashipatla), his mother (Rohini Hattangadi) and maid Ruksana, who have two children – Dean Elijah and Junior Imad.

One Friday night, in a tragic accident, Maya’s car crashes into a woman – leaving her bleeding victim on the roadside. Guilt gripped her. With weak nerves, she trusts her boss and love interest Amar Malhotra (Iqbal Khan) and tells her she did the right thing, otherwise she will be accused of ‘drunk driving’, which will tarnish her image.

A day later, Maya learns that the victim in the hit and run case is Ruksana’s daughter Alia. She goes her own way to help Ruksana and her family trying to figure out what their daughter is doing on the streets at that late hour.

Ruksana is overcome by shame, as well as her husband Salim, who works as a spot mat in the film industry. Salim resigned to fate, but Ruksana was a fighter who struggled to escape the ordeal.

Meanwhile, Rohini (Vidatri Pandi), who is training on the WRD News Network, is hell-bent on investigating this hit-and-run case, hoping to get independent credit for a story. The police are also getting into their problems.

Designed in the form of a diary, the film depicts events from the Friday following the accident to the following Friday. At this point, we see emotions and reactions that are communicative and touch the soft space of our soul.

Shebali Shah and Vidya Balan are both excellent actors who exhibit flawless acting. Surya Kasipatla is as dear as Aayush who stands by them with equal enthusiasm. Your heart melts when he defends Ruksana and then calls his mother differently. The bond he shares with Shafin Patel, who writes the Imad essay, is equally charming.

Iqbal Khan and Manav Kaul are the cast, and Salim Sharad is a notch better than them.

The film begins with a promise, but in the middle, its pace slows and the pulse does not revive. In the final act, the story tries to resolve its multifaceted tensions neatly, but it seems like a flat, hasty decision, in which Maya clashes with her own life and bond with her maid, promising possible understanding and reconciliation.

Overall, ‘Jalsa’ is a well-made film that contradicts its emotions.
