Russian astronauts arrive at the International Space Station in yellow and blue
New York: Three Russian astronauts arrived at the International Space Station on Friday (March 18, 2022) wearing yellow airplanes with blue accents in colors that matched the Ukrainian flag. Men are the first new humans to arrive at the space station since the start of the Russian war in Ukraine last month.
Russian space agency Roscosmos astronauts Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveyev and Sergey Korsakov successfully launched their Soyuz MS-21 spacecraft from the Russian-leased Pygmony launch pad in Kazakhstan at 8:55 pm (11:55 am EDT) on Friday night.
They arrived smoothly at the station three hours later at the orbital outpost with two Russians, four Americans and a German.
The video, taken while Artemiev was preparing to join the space station, showed him wearing a blue air suit. It is not clear what message the yellow uniforms they changed should send.
After the astronauts were able to talk to family on Earth, Artemiev was asked about costumes. He said each team chooses their own option.
“It’s our way of choosing a color. But in reality, we have accumulated a lot of yellow stuff, so we have to use it. That’s why we had to wear yellow,” he said.

Since the beginning of the war, many have used the Ukrainian flag and its colors to show solidarity with the country.
As a result of the war, space launches were canceled and contracts were broken. Roscosmos leader Dmitry Rogozin has warned that the United States should use a “whip” to fly into space after Russia said it would stop supplying rocket engines to US companies. However, Rogos’ decades-long peaceful off-planet partnership is in jeopardy, especially at the space station.
NASA executive Bill Nelson rejected Rocosin’s comments and told the Associated Press: “It’s just Dmitry Rocosin. He’s occasionally joking.
“Other people working in the Russian civilian space program, they are professional,” Nelson told the AP on Friday. “They will not miss a beat with us, the American astronauts and the control of the American mission. Above all, in space, we can cooperate with our Russian friends and colleagues.”
NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hay, who broke the US single spaceflight record of 340 days on Tuesday, is scheduled to leave the space station with two Russians aboard the Soyuz capsule for a touchdown in Kazakhstan on March 30.
In April, three more NASA and an Italian astronaut are due to explode for the space station.
