England fast bowler Matt Fisher took a wicket off his second ball of the innings to turn the tide against the West Indies in the second Test in Barbados on Thursday.

The West Indies were 71 for one at the end of the second day’s play at Kensington Oval, 436 runs behind England, with Joe Root (153) and Ben Stokes (120) scoring different centuries.

England may have been a bit disappointed in making only one breakthrough, but may have had a chance of failing outside the equation on a pitch.

“The wicket changed at the back end of our innings,” Stokes said.

“We’ve seen some of Lychee’s (Jack Leach) balls spin, and the Seamers thought they were in the game better than Antigua (in the first Test) anyway.”

After nearly two hot days on the field, West Indies captain and opener Craig Broadwhite showed good discipline to survive to stumps with 28 not out.
Shamar Brooks escaped bad shots on 31 runs.

Fisher got off to a tough start in the Test arena when his first ball was bowled for four by gully by left-arm spinner John Campbell.

But the 24-year-old put his next delivery on an uncertain track outside the off stump.

A better player might have left the ball alone, but Campbell, who averages a maximum of 23, has hung his bat.

Fisher was mobbed by his teammates, but the only joy was before England approached.

They thought they had a second wicket when Broadwhite Jack Leach became the LPW, but that decision was overturned when a review showed the outer edge.

Another newcomer to England, Saqib Mahmood, had to wait until the 17th over.

Earlier, England paid the iron grip on the game, scoring 507 for 9 shortly after tea.

Captain Root was his usual stylish self on the top score, scoring 153 off 316 balls, his 12th highest Test score, before falling to the Khmer Rouge LPW.

Evleventh tons

After taking 85 off New Zealand in 2015 and 105 against South Africa in 2016, Stokes reached his 11th Test century off 114 balls after lunch.

He struck out 120 off 128 balls, including 6 sixes and 11 fours.

The all-rounder watched the new ball carefully, and in his best Twenty20 style he turned spinner Veerasamy Permal and fast bowler Alzari Joseph out of attack.

Stokes advanced from 23 off 37 balls to 89 runs.

England then lost several wickets for runs by the time the team declared.
