What is ADS-B technology?

How can flights without ADS-B be tracked?

Non-ADS-B aircraft can be monitored using a radar surveillance system or positions can be calculated using multilators (MLAT). The MLAT system uses a system called arrival time difference (TDOA). However, MLAT coverage can only reach over 3,000-10,000 feet.

By monitoring the time it takes to receive the signal, it is possible to calculate the position of the aircraft using the ModeS-transponder. To activate MLAT, four or more FR24-receivers must receive signals from the same aircraft. The potential of four or more receivers to receive the transponder signal increases with height.
