The Railway Court has ruled that it is not possible to divert some trains on the Palakkad-Pollachi-Coimbatore route to avoid injuring elephants. The Southern Railway has told the Chennai High Court that it is not feasible to limit the train speed between Palakkad and Pothanur to less than 45 km per hour to prevent elephants from colliding.

Recently, 3 elephants, including a cub, were killed when a speeding train collided with a truck on the Walayar section between Palakkad and Pothanur. Following the incident, Tamil Nadu Railway officials and forest officials clashed.

The Tamil Nadu government has filed a petition in the Chennai High Court seeking an order for the railways to reduce the speed of trains to 45 kmph at night as many elephants were killed on the tracks in the previous days as well.

A division bench comprising Justices V Bharathidasan and N Satish Kumar appeared before the court on Thursday. The speed cannot be further reduced due to the slope.

He told the court that reducing the speed of trains below the minimum allowable limit would endanger the safety of passengers, especially those traveling at night.

He also said it was not possible to divert trains at night, adding that there were two routes between Palakkad and Bothanur via the Walayar Contiguous Hill. The `A` line was 48.26 km long and the` B` line was 52.56 km long, both of which were electrified.

He said if trains were diverted from Palakkad to Bothanur via Pollachi, it would be 97.68 km long and single track. The railway prosecutor said it would still run for 143 minutes.

However, the prosecutor told the court that the Southern Railway had installed hanging solar fences and solar lights to prevent the train collision elephants from dying.

He also said that about 10 to 15 meters of vegetation on both sides of the track was cleared to ensure free view for the logo pilots.

The railway lawyer also said that the Railways was in consultation with private software companies to implement the capabilities of artificial intelligence forecasting systems that would detect the movements of elephants through cameras installed at various locations and send real-time information to a centrally monitored control room. He said the forest department had not yet started work on setting up watchtowers at the accident sites.
